In our ever-connected digital age, online safety has become a crucial part of daily life, especially for young people navigating the internet. As educators and parents, it’s essential to guide our students in understanding potential online risks and knowing how to protect themselves. This week, we explore some common online threats such as scams, suspicious activity, and sextortion.

Deputyship and Power of Attorney.

听This is something which parents identified in our survey last year and at coffee events as an area of uncertainty. I thought that I would cover it again and hope that it is informative. These are both options for supporting your children to make decisions, or to make decisions on their behalf when they become adults. When you look these up online the focus is predominantly on older people and again mainly around dementia.

So, what鈥檚 the difference? In a word, capacity.

Deputyship: A person/people appointed by the Court of Protection to make decisions on behalf of someone who lacks or has lost capacity to make decisions for themselves.

Power of Attorney: A person over the age of 18 chooses a person/people to make decisions on their behalf. The person must have capacity. They can choose joint or severally, meaning that attorneys can make decisions independently or jointly.

For both there are 2 types:

• Health and Welfare
• Finances

Deputyship takes longer as the deputy needs to be approved by the Court of Protection. There is a cost of 拢395 for each of the aspects (health & welfare, finances) and an annual cost for assuming the role of deputy.

Power of Attorney is a shorter process. The cost for each one is 拢84, but this can be reduced depending on the person鈥檚 income (if young person in receipt of benefits the charge is reduced by 50%)

Next week I will revisit Mental Capacity. It is so important that parents of children with special needs understand this, as the Mental Capacity Act is there to protect adults with Learning Disabilities and/or disabilities once they reach adulthood.

Using her lived experience with chronic illness and disability and over 16 years of experience in the fashion industry, she aims to help minimise the barriers to accessing adaptive clothing.

We鈥檝e learned so much from the disabled community, and this is just the start. By continuing to listen, collaborate, and innovate, we鈥檒l keep getting closer鈥�.

Daydream Cinema at Gosforth Civic Theatre

Daydream Cinema returns to Gosforth Civic Theatre on Tuesday听25th February for three great screenings organised by autistic people.

We鈥檒l be hosting Relaxed Screenings of Fern Gully, Masters of the Universe and Fantasy A Gets A Mattress designed to be accessible and welcoming to Neurodivergent audiences. Everyone is welcome to attend.

I鈥檇 love to see you there with a group from your organisation.

• 1pm doors, 1:30pm start – Fern Gully (U) Can Crysta the Fairy and her friends fight to save their rainforest home?
• 4pm doors, 4:30pm start – Masters of the Universe (PG) Craft-Along Screening. Draw, knit, crochet or craft-along with He-Man in his quest to save the world from Skeletor.
• 7pm doors, 7:30pm start – Fantasy A Gets听 Mattress (12) Homeless autistic rapper Fantasy A searches for fame and find a good mattress to sleep on

Our Pay What You Can On The Day option means you pay nothing when you book and and then you can make a donation on the day if you are able to. We do not want cost to be a barrier for audiences to attend screenings, so please don’t worry if you are not able to pay at this time.

Tim Lamb Centre:

听February Half Term at The Tim Lamb Children’s Centre.

The Tim Lamb Centre is a specialist play and leisure facility for children with disabilities / additional needs and their siblings. Please bring evidence of your child’s disability/ additional needs with you on your first visit.

*Family membership is available to any family who has a child with disabilities/ additional needs. This currently costs 拢20 per family.
